Salamatak – The Musculoskeletal System

The musculoskeletal system is what gives us the ability to move our bodies. It consists of the bones, muscles, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, joints, and other connective tissue that supports and binds tissues and organs together. Despite its importance, unfortunately many neglect the importance of maintaining the health of their musculoskeletal system.

Body Postures

First, let us identify what a posture is. Your posture is the form in which you hold your body in. There are two types of postures:

  • Dynamic posture: This is the form your body takes when you are moving. Examples include walking, running, or exercising.
  • Static posture: The form your body takes when you are not moving, like when you are sitting, standing, or sleeping.

Incorrect Posture Symptoms

Unfortunately, many of us have an incorrect body posture especially when we perform activities for a prolonged period of time such as using the computer or using our phones. Here are some indicators to alert you to your bad posture:

  1. Bent knees when standing or walking
  2. Head leaning slightly towards the front or back
  3. Muscle cramps and pains
  4. Back pain
  5. Headaches

How to correct your posture:

  1. Standing Posture:
    1. If you catch yourself in a bad posture correct yourself immediately. Perform the “Reverse the Arch” rule by reversing your back to the opposite direction you were bending to.
    2. Focus your body weight on your feet rather than your back or knees.
    3. Align your feet with your shoulders.
    4. Avoid standing on one foot for prolonged periods of time.

2. Sitting Posture:

  1. Keep your feet flat on the ground and avoid crossing your legs.
  2. Leave some space between your chair and the back of your knees.
  3. Relax your shoulders and avoid sitting in the same position for prolonged periods of time.
  4. Perform the “Reverse the Arch” rule.

3. Sleeping Posture:

  1. Ensure that your mattress supports your spine and suits your size and height.
  1. If you suffer from back pains try to sleep on your right side and place a pillow between your knees.
  2. Avoid sleeping on your stomach, and instead try sleeping on your back or your right side.
