What are vaccines?

Put simply, vaccinations are the introduction of a diseases to your body. Vaccines allow your body to fight a weak, or even dead microbe to produce antibodies. These antibodies will allow you to develop an immunity to that disease.

Infection Diseases

Vaccinations have allowed the human race to drastically lower the infection rate of many serious, and even deadly diseases. One of the most common infectious illnesses that is responsible for admitting millions of people to the emergency room is the Seasonal Influenza.

Seasonal Influenza

Seasonal Influenza (Flu) is a respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses. The symptoms vary from one patient to the other, but it could be life-threatening to certain individuals. The Flu virus mutates and gets stronger every year, hence the name ‘seasonal’. This is why it is important you take the flu shot every year.

Seasonal Influenza Symptoms

The symptoms of the Seasonal Influenza vary from one person to the other. This variation can be caused by the strength of the virus itself, or the patient’s immune system. These symptoms include:

  • Chills.
  • Sweating.
  • Runny or stuffy nose.
  • Headaches.
  • Dry cough.
  • Fatigue and laziness.
  • Muscles in muscles, or the body in general.
  • Fever over 38°C/100°F.
  • Vomiting or diarrhea.

Who is at risk?

Seasonal Influenza can infect anyone, however, it can be more dangerous on certain people, such as:

    • Children.
    • Pregnant women.
    • The Elderly.
    • Patients with chronic diseases.
    • Workers in the health sector.
    • People with compromised immune systems.

Weak Immune Systems

Your immune system is your body’s first line of defense against pathogens. If your immune system is weak, it will not be able to defend your body against these illnesses. The symptoms of a weakened immune system include:

    • Being under a lot of stress and anxiety: Many studies link the mental stress to a weak immune system. This is why many students get sick after their final exams.
    • Digestive Issues: another sign for a weak immune system is having frequent digestive problems such as gas, bloating, diarrhea, or constipation.
    • Slow wound healing: if your body takes a while to heal your wounds, burns, or bruises this could be a sign for a weak immune system.
    • Chronic fatigue and exhaustion: Feeling tired after getting enough sleep, and resting is another sign for a weak immune system.

Strengthening Your Immune System

Vaccinations are one of the most important methods to strengthen your immune system. You can also strengthen your immune system by adopting healthy habits such as:

    • Getting enough sleep: your body repairs itself during sleep; thus, it is important you maintain a consistent sleep schedule so your body can fight off any pathogens.
    • Regularly exercising: Studies prove that exercising 3 times a week helps your body fights off illness causing microbes.
    • Strengthen your digestive system: 70% of your immune system is in your gut, therefore by strengthening your digestion you enhance the performance of your immune system. You can introduce foods that are rich with healthy bacteria to your diet such as Kefir, fermented tea (Kombucha), and fermented cabbage such as Sauerkraut, or Kimchi.
